German state of Schleswig-Holstein orders Facebook to allow pseudonyms

German state of SchleswigHolstein orders Facebook to allow pseudonyms

While some countries are insisting that web users hand over their real names, a German state has ordered Facebook to start letting people use fake handles online "immediately." The office of the Data Protection Commissioner in the state of Schleswig-Holstein said that Facebook's real name policy violates the German Telemedia Act and promised to fine the company $26,000 if it fails to allow pseudonyms within two weeks. The decree doesn't hold water in other German regions, but Schleswig-Holstein's commissioner said that colleagues elsewhere agree with the order, and that his state is being used a pilot to test the law. Facebook said it'll fight the order "vigorously," calling it "a waste of German taxpayer's money," and added that its policy already complies with European laws. We'll have to see whether this turns into yet another privacy tiff with the nation, or if it's just a lot of sturm & drang in a teapot.

Amy Winehouse inquest to be heard again

LONDON (AP) ? Officials in London say the inquest into the death of soul singer Amy Winehouse was overseen by a coroner who lacked the proper qualifications and will be re-heard next month.

Camden Council says a new hearing will take place on Jan. 8.

Winehouse was found dead in her London home in July 2011 at age 27. An inquest in October 2011 found the "Back to Black" singer had died of accidental alcohol poisoning.

Assistant deputy coroner Suzanne Greenaway, who oversaw the inquest, resigned the next month after her qualifications were questioned. She had been appointed by her husband, Andrew Reid, the coroner for inner north London.

Reid was suspended, and resigned earlier this month.

Winehouse family spokesman Chris Goodman said Monday that family had not requested a new hearing.

December Gifts for Women : Ideas For Women Health and Fitness ...

Ho Ho Ho and Merry Christmas. It is that time of year where gift ideas are all over the media. Often women are so stressed over picking the right gifts for others that they ignore their own wants or needs during the season. This month we will be looking at great gift ideas that are perfect for women and also will improve or enhance health and wellness. The ideas here are great ideas for other women on your list too.

Monday?s gift: Anything for the feet. Why feet, you may ask?? Healthy feet are imperative to good spine alignment, good posture, flexibility, and pain free movement. Feet do actually affect all of these. Consider this: over grown toe nails, ingrown toe nails, plantar warts, athletes foot skin rash, corns, blisters, or anything that causes pain and imbalance will affect the way you stand, walk, and feel.

Gift ideas: ? Make a foot health gift basket with fancy wrapping. Include the following:

A toenail clipper set which should include an emery board or file.

Comfortable gel inserts for your shoes.

Packages of aromatherapy foot soak mix or make your own with bath salts and Epsom salts. Add your favorite essential oil for the scent and sit back for a long foot soak.

Bright colored nail polish, nail polish remover, and the foam forms that seperate the toes for painting.

Soft footie socks

Foot lotion

Soft slippers with a rubber sole for support.

Wooden massage roller, can easily be found in department stores. Roll your foot over the movable wooden balls for a great foot massage that increases circulation to the toes.

Calus stone for removing dry skin

A foot bath tub

Buy yourself a good fitting pair of shoes.

A first aid kit for feet to include band-aids, corn pads, wart remover, cuticle cream, or anything else you can think of that will make your feet feel their best.

The above suggestions may not seem glamorous to some but if you shop around you can find some really cool items for foot health. Many of the foot health ideas suggested can also be found at home among the items you already own. Just gather them in a cute basket to give yourself a foot spa during the holidays. Foot health matters and your overall well being and fitness depends on it.

The ?Psychic Being? in Savitri ? An Initial Exploration - edgardo4s ...

Savitri, the book of revelations, is Sri Aurobindo?s magnum opus, the book of secrets into inner worlds and worlds above, holding the key to their discovery, to self-mastery and more. The Psychic Being, a central being within, whose discovery in life is pivotal to self-growth and discovery, a widening of consciousness which embraces all, is a ever-recurring theme in Sri Aurobindo?s philosophy. Does Sri Aurobindo mention the term ?Psychic Being? in Savitri? Does he describe it? If so where and how? These questions led to this initial exploration in Savitri, seeking the ?Psychic Being?. An idea of the ?Psychic Being? as glimpsed from literature on Integral Yoga is presented, followed by an examination of part of Canto 5, Book 7: ?Finding of the Soul? for reference to the Psychic Being. Some conclusions are then drawn from the brief study.

The Psychic Being and the Soul - Some Explanations

The Psychic Being is one of the central themes in Sri Aurobindo?s Integral Yoga which seeks the transformation of matter such that it would be capable of revealing the face of the Divine immanent in all of creation and beyond. The agent whose task it is to bring about that transformation of nature - the physical, vital and mental - is the Psychic being, which is a portion of the divine put into all life, and in man being given the opportunity to express itself and take over his nature, effecting a gradual transformation of all of his nature such that Divinity may express itself through the ?divinised mud?.

What is the relationship between the soul and the psychic being? Is there any essential difference between them? Further reading reveals an essential difference between the Soul and the Psychic Being. In Integral Yoga, the soul state is differentiated into two states, namely ?the soul in its essence? and ?the soul in its evolved, individualised form?. The soul in its essence is what is referred to in various terms in this yoga as ?psyche, psychic essence, soul spark or soul element? (Sri Aurobindo, 1989, p. iii). It is by this soul spark or soul element that ?we exist and persist as individual beings in Nature? (Aurobindo, 1970a, p. 891). The soul in its evolved, individualized form is referred to variously as ?psychic being, psychic personality, soul-form? or soul personality? (Sri Aurobindo, 1989, p. iii). This is the soul personality that evolves with the growth of consciousness during each life-time. The Psychic Being then is the evolving soul.

The term ?Psychic? is derived from the Greek term, ?psukhe?, which means the soul. In the many layers that make up the being, the Psychic Being is the innermost being which lends its support to all the other parts of the being, both inner and outer, the layers belonging to both the Purusha (Self) and Prakriti (nature or manifested self). It is described as a ?spark or portion of the Divine? present in all forms of creation. The Psychic Being is a flowering of what is called the Psyche or Psychic entity or soul. This psyche grows, in the course of its evolution and through its various experiences in life-times into an individual psychic personality in the human. This individualized personality is termed the Psychic Being (Dalal, 2007, p. 204).

Here is an extract of Sri Aurobindo?s description of these terms in ?Synthesis of Yoga? (Aurobindo, 1997, p. 141):

?But the true soul of man is not there; (heart of desire) it is in the true invisible heart hidden in some luminous cave of the nature: there under some infiltration of the divine Light is our soul, a silent inmost being of which few are even aware; for if all have a soul, few are conscious of their true soul or feel its direct impulse. There dwells the little spark of the Divine which supports this obscure mass of our nature and around it grows the psychic being, the formed soul or the real Man within us. It is as this psychic being in him grows and the movements of the heart reflect its divinations and impulsions that man becomes more and more aware of his soul, ceases to be a superior animal, and, awakened to the glimpses of the godhead within him, admits more and more its intimations of a deeper life and consciousness and an impulse towards things divine. It is one of the decisive moments of the integral Yoga when this psychic being liberated, brought out from the veil to the front, can pour the full flood of its divinations, seeings and impulsions on the mind, life and body of man and begin to prepare the upbuilding of divinity in the earthly nature.?

The Psychic Being in Savitri

We have a sense of the significance of the Psychic Being and its emergence in man as a decisive action in the course of individual evolution. However, in ?Savitri?, Sri Aurobindo?s magnum opus, it is quite a wonder that the term psychic being occurs nowhere in the 24,000 odd lines that constitute this epic poem, as revealed by a word search. However, its closest root, the term ?Psyche? occurs once, as described below (Aurobindo, 1970b, p. 487).

But for such vast spiritual change to be,

Out of the mystic cavern in man?s heart

The heavenly Psyche must put off her veil

And step into common nature?s crowded rooms

And stand uncovered in that nature?s front

And rule its thoughts and fill the body and life.

The Psyche, in Sri Aurobindo?s yoga is a direct reference to the ?soul? or ?innermost part of the being?(Sri Aurobindo, 1989, p. iii) as opposed to the psychic being. In other words, it is ?the soul; the essence of the soul; spark of the Divine which is there in all things.?

Going through the first 201 lines (in the first 5 pages, from pg. 522-527) of Canto 5; Book 7, there is some indication that Sri Aurobindo was referring to the Psychic Being, although the term psychic being was never used. These following lines especially hold the clue to the fact that Sri Aurobindo was referring to the Psychic Being (Aurobindo, 1970b, pp. 526, 527):

But since she knows the toil of mind and life

As a mother feels and shares her children?s lives,

She puts forth a small portion of herself,

A being no bigger than the thumb of man

Into a hidden region of the heart

To face the pang and to forget the bliss,

To share the suffering and endure earth?s wounds

And labour mid the labour of the stars.

The key to the fact that Sir Aurobindo was indeed referring to the Psychic Being appears in the line, ?A being no bigger than the thumb?. This line is a direct reference to the Upanishadic principle of the caitya purusa (Sri Aurobindo, 1989). It is in the ?Katho Upanishad?, that the Caitya Purusa is described as a being no bigger than the thumb. The subsequent lines give ample description of the being that is no bigger than the thumb is an out flowering or the putting out of this being in question by ?The Spirit?s conscious representative?, referred to in the feminine in order to bear nature?s pangs and toil with her. The Soul-Psychic being relationship echoed in these lines above are taken up again in ?Synthesis of Yoga?. Sri Aurobindo points out (Aurobindo, 1997, pp. 153-154) that even when a semblance of the Psychic Being is present, ?it is still in all but a few a smaller portion of the being??no bigger in the mass of the body than the thumb of a man? was the image used by the ancient seers..? He is referring here to the Caitya Purusa pointed out by the ancient seers, referred to him as the Psychic Being in later works.

Elsewhere too, in ?Synthesis of Yoga?, Sri Aurobindo makes a direct reference to the Psychic Being as the Caitya Purusa (Aurobindo, 1997, p. 238 - 239) as in :

? ??this veiled psychic entity is the flame of the Godhead always alight within us, inextinguishable even by that dense unconsciousness of any spiritual self within which obscures our outward nature. It is a flame born out of the Divine and, luminous inhabitant of the Ignorance, grows in it till it is able to turn it towards the Knowledge. It is the concealed Witness and Control, the hidden Guide, the Daemon of Socrates, the inner light or inner voice of the mystic. It is that which endures and is imperishable in us from birth to birth, untouched by death, decay or corruption, an indestructible spark of the Divine. Not the unborn Self or Atman, for the Self even in presiding over the existence of the individual is aware always of its universality and transcendence, it is yet its deputy in the forms of Nature, the individual soul, caitya purusa, supporting mind, life and body, standing behind the mental, the vital, the subtle-physical being in us and watching and profiting by their development and experience.?

We can be quite assured that Sri Aurobindo was referring to the Psychic Being through these cross-references. A further confirmation of this can also be drawn by analyzing the content in the following lines (Aurobindo, 1970b, pp. 526 -527) as follows:

A being stood immortal in transience,

Deathless dallying with momentary things,

In whose wide eyes of tranquil happiness

Which pity and sorrow could not abrogate

Infinity turned its gaze on finite shapes:

This being is the soul, transcendent, ?Observer of the silent steps of the hours, Eternity upheld the minute?s acts And the passing scenes of the Everlasting?s play?.. The Spirit?s conscious representative,..? However, to help the natural portion of man to receive and bear the impacts of life,

She puts forth a small portion of herself,

A being no bigger than the thumb of man

Into a hidden region of the heart

To face the pang and to forget the bliss,

To share the suffering and endure earth?s wounds

And labour mid the labour of the stars.

This being, ?no bigger than the thumb of man? is an out-flowering of the Soul entity or soul element, as described in these lines, something put forth by the Soul. Savitri gains proximity with The Soul through her Psychic Being. It is likely that in Savitri, her Psychic Being was fully formed and therefore eventually opened the gateway to the Soul, with which she merges, as the forthcoming lines depict.

Here in this chamber of flame and light they met;

They looked upon each other, knew themselves,

The secret deity and its human part,

The calm immortal and the struggling soul.

Then with a magic transformation?s speed

They rushed into each other and grew one.

It is to be understood that the soul spark or psychic spark is present in life forms, but in the more evolved human nature it is given a chance to step forward, influence at first the development of the nature - the physical, mental and vital - and eventually, use perfected nature as its means of self-expression which is a crucial step leading to the divine manifestation upon earth. The mental mind perceives this in a somewhat crude chronological order. It appears that soul states flow over each other, although there is apparent an evolutionary development. In this canto, it appears that Sri Aurobindo describes the psychic being as something that is encountered on the way to the Soul, something that aids the eventual soul contact.

The experience of diving into these few lines of Savitri cannot be described in words. It was a momentary dip into an ocean of delight and wonder, something in one knowing fully well that the best and brightest treasures were far, far away, beyond the clutches of this mind or this intellect. There was a sense of silence in the lines that continuously led and also trailed behind the search, there were deeper voices that hummed the secret of the route and the surface being knew itself ill equipped for that journey. A surrender total was demanded, nothing more, nothing less, to open oneself and wait in silent aspiration. One perhaps never finishes with Savitri. Fresh windows open each time something within us reaches out to Savitri. So it is with this initial exploration. It continues.

Bacteria hijack host cell process, create their own food supply to become infectious

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Bacteria that cause the tick-borne disease anaplasmosis in humans create their own food supply by hijacking a process in host cells that normally should help kill the pathogenic bugs, scientists have found.

This bacterium, Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap), secretes a protein that can start this process. The protein binds with another protein produced by white blood cells, and that connection creates compartments that siphon host-cell nutrients to feed the bacteria, enabling their growth inside the white blood cells.

The finding defies conventional wisdom about most bacteria, which try to avoid this cellular process. Called autophagy, the process allows a cell to digest parts of itself to produce energy when it is experiencing starvation. But that digestive feature also is enacted by the immune system to help clear away certain intracellular pathogens, including those that cause salmonellosis or shigellosis.

The Ap bacterium, however, launches and then manipulates the autophagy process to its own advantage.

"This study shows how bacteria subvert natural processes," said Yasuko Rikihisa, professor of veterinary biosciences at Ohio State University and lead author of the research. "They are creating their own food supply through a cellular mechanism that hurts other infectious bacteria. And because this process doesn't cause inflammation, they do it very gently, becoming an insider that eventually kills the host cell."

The finding could help identify new targets for drugs to treat this infection, which is a rare but emerging infectious disease that can be lethal for the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. The current first-line treatment is the antibiotic doxycycline.

Also known as human granulocytic anaplasmosis, the disease affects more than 1,000 people per year in the United States, up from just 348 reported cases in 2003, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is transmitted to humans by tick bites primarily from the black-legged tick and the western black-legged tick.

The study appears online this week in the early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Ap bacterium secretes substances to perform a process resembling mating to infect host cells, primarily the granulocyte class of white blood cells that fight off invading pathogens. Rikihisa's lab previously identified a protein called Ats-1 that is secreted by Ap bacteria during this process.

In this new study, the researchers found that once inside the host cells, Ats-1 binds to another protein called Beclin 1, which is part of a system of molecules involved in the earliest stages of the autophagy process.

The scientists observed that when the two proteins bind, they create little bubbles known as vesicles. Through a series of experiments, the researchers determined that these bubbles were in fact autophagosomes -- bubble-like compartments that are formed as a cell prepares to undergo autophagy.

They were able to confirm this by imaging the vesicles to determine that they had the tell-tale double membrane characteristic of autophagosomes, and by testing for the presence of other compounds that serve as markers of the initiation of the cell-digesting process.

Under normal circumstances, autophagosomes contain the nutrients that are meant to be digested and recycled for other uses -- but in this case, the bacteria take those nutrients to promote their own growth.

That Ats-1 could start this process on its own represents a rare power for a single protein.

"We believe this is the first bacterial protein that has been found to do this," said Rikihisa, also an investigator in Ohio State's Center for Microbial Interface Biology and Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Ats-1 initiates an early stage of the autophagosome, then picks up nutrients from the main body of the host cell and closes the layers."

Most of the action of bacterial growth takes place inside a special compartment that typically doesn't contain many nutrients. But after the Ap bacterial protein starts this process of producing autophagosomes that can encase nutrients, these bubbles fuse with the compartment, creating a steady supply of food at the site of bacterial replication and growth.

The researchers showed this by further imaging the bubbles to determine that an autophagy marker protein could be found both inside and outside of the bacterial growth compartments. They also showed that infected cells did not contain any lysosomes, which are cell parts that perform the actual digestion and degradation of foreign bodies during autophagy.

An experiment in mice deficient in the Beclin 1 protein showed that infection levels were much lower if mice had low levels of this protein -- confirming its role in binding with Ats-1 and producing autophagosomes to promote infection. In cell cultures, the researchers also showed that when Ats-1 was overproduced, bacteria grew 10 times more effectively than they did in cells in which an unrelated protein was overproduced.

All of this activity allows the bacteria to remain hidden from the immune system because the induction of autophagy is considered a normal cell function and it does not produce any inflammation, which would recruit infection-fighters to the scene. Instead, the Ap bacteria set themselves up comfortably inside granulocytes and steadily grow for a few days until they rupture their host cells and generate a strong immune response -- which makes an infected person sick.

In one final experiment, Rikihisa and colleagues blocked autophagosome production in Ap-infected cells using an experimental drug called 3-MA. With that process blocked, bacterial growth declined dramatically.

3-MA is toxic to humans, but its effectiveness in blocking the infectious properties of Ap in cells suggests that its structure could serve as the basis for a safe small-molecule drug, Rikihisa said.

"A similar compound could be a potential treatment to inhibit bacterial growth," she said.

Clarifying the power of Ats-1 in inducing autophagy also suggests that this protein could be an important tool in further studies of this complex cell process that remains poorly understood, she added.

This work was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Some automated share trading systems particularly target penny shares when attempting to find trading possibilities. This is effective because penny shares are the least expensive, most unpredictable and wildly changing investments to be found in the market as it is way easier to steer their position and price with less trading activity.

Weather Channel Chevrolet Mobile Advertising - Business Insider

Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff triggered an awkward moment at Business Insider's Ignition 2012 conference today when he slammed Chevrolet's mobile advertising on a panel with Weather.com CEO David Kenny. Chevy is one of Weather's best clients.

In a discussion of how mobile ads work best, Rascoff was making the case that ads triggered by a user's location while shopping ? such as Zillow's own app, which serves up local real estate information for house buyers ? are the best kind because they enhance the user experience. Brand image ads, he said, aren't quite as useful.

"There are types of publishers this isn't going to work for," Rascoff said. "I can't imagine how a Chevy ad would enhance the user experience if I were using an app to do something completely unrelated to that activity."

Kenny then politely rebutted him: "Chevy is actually a good advertiser on Weather. Anybody who's got a big retail network [such as a set of car dealerships] finds it useful."

The exchange was good natured, but relatively unusual ? ad sellers are usually careful not to trash clients, even those they don't work for.

Rascoff then switched targets, and tossed a barb at The New York Times. "The New York Times is doing a great job of monetizing mobile? ... but are they enhancing the user experience? Well it's debatable. ... But it doesn't mean they are not going to make a lot of money from mobile."

Alas, Times executive editor Jill Abramson spoke at Ignition the day before the Kenny/Rascoff panel, and wasn't there to set him straight.

Ethiopian troops to remain in Somalia

Ethiopian troops will remain in Somalia until African Union forces fighting Islamists can take over, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said Wednesday, as he met with his Somali counterpart.

?We are waiting for AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) force to come and replace us, and until we get that assurance then we will be waiting there,? he told reporters.

Hailemariam, speaking alongside newly elected Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on his first official visit to the Ethiopian capital, gave no timeline for a pull out of troops.

Mohamud said that the Shebab is ?literally defeated? ? although many experts say it remains a potent threat ? and also warned foreign fighters with the extremists to leave Somalia.

?We have no relationship, and we do not intend to have one, with the foreign fighters in Somalia,? Mohamud said. ?The only option for them is to leave the country.?

Ethiopian troops and tanks invaded Somalia in November 2011 to attack Al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents, capturing key towns including Baidoa.

At the same time, anti-Shehab Somali forces and a 17,000-strong AU force have been also battling the Islamists, and are seeking to link up with areas held by Ethiopia.

Addis Ababa ? long seen as a traditional enemy of Somalia ? is a controversial presence in Somalia. Ethiopia entered Somalia in a 2006 US-backed invasion, but was driven out three years later by a bitter insurgency.

War-torn Somalia has been in chaos since the fall of President Siad Barre in 1991.

Against the Grand Bargain

Sen. Alan Simpson, (R-WY)(R), and Erskine Bowles. Co-chairmen of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, Erskine Bowles and former Sen. Alan Simpson

Photograph by Mark Wilson/Getty Images.

The fiscal cliff is confusing, even to the Washington legislators arguing about it. On the one hand, the cliff consists of rapid deficit-reducing tax increases and spending cuts. On the other hand, the people most adamant about the need to avoid the cliff are calling for deficit reduction. I listened to No. 2 Senate Democrat Dick Durbin give a fiscal-cliff speech on Tuesday framed around the idea that ?deficit reduction is a progressive cause.? The main anti-cliff group is even named Fix the Debt.

Congress has structured the rules so that only an agreement on long-term deficit reduction?a grand bargain?can prevent the growth-killing, short-term deficit reduction of the fiscal cliff. But that?s no coincidence. Proponents of the grand bargain to resolve long-term fiscal questions don?t favor a bargain because they want to avoid the fiscal cliff. They deliberately created the fiscal cliff in hopes that the emergency would set the stage for a grand bargain. It?s a strategy they hit upon only after their previous hope that the 2011 debt-ceiling crisis would force a bargain proved futile.

The problem is that the quest for the grand bargain is essentially a quest for the impossible. Whereas ginning up crises to force Congress to strike that impossible bargain is wreaking real tangible harm on the country. Whatever happens during the lame-duck session, the best thing for America would be for the great and the good in Washington and corporate America to drop their fixation with the grand bargain.

The grand bargain is impossible because it?s not possible for today?s Congress to bind the hands of future congresses. In 1997, for example, President Bill Clinton and House Republicans struck a grand compromise that reduced capital gains rates and expanded health care for children. By 2003, the budget framework of 1997 was completely obsolete, thanks to two rounds of Bush tax cuts and two new wars. The deal between Clinton and Newt Gingrich didn?t bind new leaders and didn?t foresee new circumstances. Nothing members of Congress agree to in 2012 or 2013 is going to change the fact that the 2019 budget deficit will be determined by the will of the politicians in office at that time and the situation they face.

And the current situation is that weak demand is giving us low and stable inflation plus low interest rates. This is not a problem that deficit reduction could solve. The sensible policy solution is to focus on the illness we have right now, and let decisions about long-term tax hikes and spending cuts be made later, when the patient is healthy.

When financial markets do eventually demand deficit reduction, they?ll want to see immediate tax hikes and spending rollbacks. That?s what happened repeatedly during the later Reagan years, in the big 1990 and 1993 budget deals, and in the eurozone periphery. It will be unpleasant when it happens, but it hasn?t happened yet, because the markets recognize that stabilizing the economy is more important. Simply promising that future congresses will do things differently impresses nobody. The various spending caps in the Simpson-Bowles plan no more prevent future spending than the 1997 budget deal prevented the Bush tax cuts, the post-9/11 hike in military spending, or the outlays associated with No Child Left Behind or the Medicare prescription drug benefit.

The only grand bargain that would work would be an abolition of democracy. How much the government should spend, and on what, and where the money should come from is the essence of politics. Corporate leaders? hazy desire for long-term ?certainty? is understandable to a point, but it?s completely impractical.

During the Bush years, the grand-bargain crowd was an amusing curiosity. But in the Obama years they?ve become actively dangerous. In part this is the result of Pete Peterson?s lavish funding of grand bargaineering crowding other, more solvable issues off the table. Even more insidious is the crisis-mongering. In the early days of the Obama administration, I heard some officials muse that sooner or later a bond market crisis would arise that would force Republicans to the table on taxes. More recently, I?ve heard of Wall Street types lamenting the absence of a bond-market crisis that would force Democrats to cut entitlements. This is the mentality that led the White House to initially welcome the 2011 debt-ceiling standoff as a useful trigger for a grand bargain. Instead, all it brought us is the fiscal cliff. The repeated crises are a dangerous game that discourages investment, thus leaving the country less prepared to meet the demands of an aging population. And all for an essentially worthless promise to reduce deficits in the future.

This cliff will probably be avoided, but whatever happens, it?s time to stop grand bargain fantasizing and start focusing on present-day problems.?

How The Invention Of Video Games Saved The World From Space ...

If only your hand-eye coordination and video game skills could actually save the world. This is a new short film that shows the power of hard work and retro gaming.

The Invention of Video Games highlights an inventor named Herman A. Tari (get it?) who creates the world?s first video game and joystick, only to find that no one has any use for his work. As Herman starts to doubt his work, an alien invasion consumes the Earth. Helpless, the world looks for a lonely hero who can defeat the space invaders to save the planet.

This short film is pretty funny as it rewrites video game history with a bent towards comedy, science fiction, and the absurd. The short film speaks to that part of humanity that wants to help others through innovation, resourcefulness, and technology, and the ability to fool robots with a cheap robot disguise made with cardboard boxes and a garbage can lid.

The short film was directed and co-written by Matt MacDonald, and co-written by Anthony Falleroni for The Continuum, a collective of gamers and filmmakers. The Continuum is also a network that can be found on Stage 5 Entertainment TV on YouTube.com, an Internet TV network that is dedicated to emerging gaming trends and geek culture.

Director Matt MacDonald is a filmmaker from Los Angeles, California. He got his MFA in Film and Television Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He gained recognition for his earlier short film,?GoldenBox, which was screened at film festivals throughout the country and at San Diego Comic-Con, garnered numerous accolades, and caught the eye of the film and video game industry.

Another Philadelphia Casino Applicant Emerges at 11th Hour ? CBS ...

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) ? The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board says it has received six applications for Philadelphia?s second casino license ? including one that wasn?t on the radar screen until now.

?Prior to the closing of the application period, the board did receive six applications,? says Doug Harbach, the spokesman for the board, ?and of course these are voluminous applications that fill up boxes.? And they need to be reviewed by the board so that we can then, in the near future, put out a great deal more public information.?

Five of the applications were anticipated.? They include a proposal from Wynn Resorts (related story) and one from developer Bart Blatstein (related story).

But there is also new proposal from an entity called PHL Local Gaming, headed by produce magnate Joseph Procacci, which would be located at 3333 South Front Street.

That applicant, however, did not submit an impact statement to the city on time.? The gambling board spokesman would not speculate on how that might affect the application.

Six applications had been originally anticipated. But one expected applicant whose project involved a casino near the Pennsylvania Convention Center dropped out.

UPDATE 2-NBC Olympics coverage boosts Comcast quarterly results

* Earnings of 46 cents a share match Wall Street estimates

* Comcast loses fewer cable video customers than expected

* NBC has ratings momentum-analyst

* Shares up 1.3 percent

Oct 26 (Reuters) - Comcast Corp posted a higher quarterly profit on Friday after its NBC Universal media unit scored $1.2 billion in additional revenue from its London Olympics coverage.

The leading U.S. cable TV company, whose shares rose more than 1 percent in premarket trading, also benefited from adding Internet users.

The London Olympics coverage helped NBC Universal's revenue climb more than 30 percent to $6.8 billion from a year earlier. The games drew a record audience that averaged 31.1 million viewers per night, 12 percent above the Beijing Olympics.

In the third quarter, revenue at NBC Universal's NBC broadcast unit jumped 84 percent to $2.78 billion.

Because of the Olympics, "broadcast actually made money for the first time in a long time," said Macquarie analyst Amy Yong.

The strong ratings performance over the summer means Comcast will at least break even on its $1.18 billion deal for Olympics broadcast rights, while analysts had initially expected it to lose money on the agreement.

Yong said Comcast shares were trading higher on Friday because NBC's ratings momentum could extend to the fourth quarter. To the surprise of industry analysts, NBC has been leading its competitors in TV ratings in the key 18-49 age group this fall.

Comcast took a 51 percent controlling stake in NBC Universal in January 2011, but still generates the bulk of its revenue from its steady cable TV business.

Revenue at the cable unit rose 7 percent to $9.97 billion. Its 287,000 new Internet customers also beat StreetAccount estimates of 277,000 additions. The company lost 117,000 video customers, smaller than the loss of 133,000 that the research firm had forecast.

Yong, the Macquarie analyst, said she had expected Comcast to add video subscribers in the fourth quarter.

Average revenue per video customer rose about 9 percent to $150.73 as more subscribers bought pricier products, such as high-definition digital recorder devices.

Comcast posted third-quarter net income of $2.1 billion, or 78 cents a share. Excluding gains from sales of spectrum and a stake in A&E Networks, earnings came to 46 cents a share, matching the analysts' average estimate, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 15 percent to $16.54 billion, which came in above Wall Street estimates of $16.08 billion.

Comcast shares were up 1.3 percent at $36.82 in trading before the market opened.

Muslim pilgrims stone the devil in symbolic hajj rite

MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Millions of pilgrims in Saudi Arabia on Friday furiously cast pebbles in a symbolic stoning of the devil, carrying out a final rite of hajj, as Muslims around the world celebrated the start of Islam's biggest holiday, the Feast of Sacrifice.

After stoning three walls symbolizing Satan in a rejection of sin and temptation, male pilgrims changed out of the seamless terrycloth robes of pilgrimage and shaved their heads, as a sign of renewal. Women ? and those men who prefer not to undergo a complete shave ? had a lock of hair clipped.

Though pilgrims will repeat the stoning ritual for at least two more days, they could now call themselves "hajjis," referring to those who have done the pilgrimage.

Malik Evangelatos, from Ukiah, Calif., said the experience felt "wonderful, satisfying and humbling."

Evangelatos, who converted to Islam six years ago, said the simple pilgrim's garment that he had worn the past few days helped him "see the bigger picture in life and go back changed, happy and appreciative." For him, the hajj brought a chance to be truly equal regardless of ethnicity or race.

"It has probably been the highlight of my life outside of getting married and having a baby," he said. "You feel an emotional release. It is something that is not recreated anywhere else in the world."

For the stoning ritual, the 3.4 million pilgrims from around the world filed in crowds through a multi-level structure housing the walls symbolizing the devil in the desert valley of Mina, outside the holy city of Mecca.

The structure of ramps maintains traffic flow, moving pilgrims on four levels past the walls, as they throw seven pebbles at each. Some have criticized the nearly kilometer-long (0.6 mile) cement structure, which resembles a mega parking garage with escalators, saying it detracts from the simplicity and spiritual aspect of hajj.

But the facility protects lives, Hajj Ministry Director General Amin Fatani, told The Associated Press. The stoning ritual has been the scene of deadly crushes and stampedes killing hundreds ? the most recent in 2006 ? as pilgrims tried to squeeze past and throw their stones, especially since there used to be pillars instead of walls, meaning the massive throngs had to focus on a smaller point. Even with the walls, pilgrims on one side often get hit by pebbles thrown by people on the other side.

"The life of a hajji is precious to the government and their safety comes first," Fatani said. "If we leave hajj the way we had it been before, there will be a catastrophe from the first day."

On Friday, Muslims marked the holiday, known in Arabic as Eid al-Adha, commemorating what Muslims believe was Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail ? the Biblical Ishmael, though Christians and Jews believe his other son Isaac was the near-sacrifice ? as a test of his faith from God.

Around the world, Muslims slaughtered lambs, sheep and other livestock in remembrance, giving the meat to the poor. At Mina, pilgrims purchased tokens to have a sheep slaughtered at nearby slaughterhouses.

?

The day of stoning marked an exhausting trek for pilgrims between the string of ritual sites strung across the desert outside Mecca. They spent the day Thursday at Mount Arafat in a day of contemplation and prayers to wipe away past sins. Then overnight, they went to the nearby plain of Muzdalifah to collect the pebbles they would use in the stoning ritual before heading to Mina by the morning.

Between the movements, many also went back into Mecca to again circumambulate the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure toward which Muslims pray every day ? Islam's holiest site.

Tunisian pharmacist Ahlam Zahar said she teared up seeing the sheer number of people praying in unison as she approached the Kaaba late Thursday before coming to Mina for the stoning on Friday.

"Hajj needs energy and concentration," she said. "It's really hard under the heat."

For most pilgrims coming from poorer Muslim nations, it is common to sleep in the streets and walk the trajectory among the sites, a distance of around 30 kilometers (19 miles). Many have children or elderly relatives with them.

"I envy them," Ahmed Fahmy said of those enduring the difficult trek. "These people are following the footsteps of the Prophet (Muhammad). They could manage to get rides, but they exhaust themselves for the bigger reward with Allah."

Fahmy, the general manager of the Cairo-based Islamic Huda TV, said this was his 11th Hajj to complete. Despite feeling tired afterward, the reward of the pilgrimage is in the hardship one faces, he said.

"You feel obedient to Allah," Fahmy said. "I feel like it's something that is entirely for the pleasure of Allah."

Accused Ga. gunman charged in '01 mosque shooting

BALTIMORE (AP) ? A man accused of killing a Georgia megachurch volunteer leading a prayer service in a chapel was charged more than a decade ago with a shooting at a mosque in Maryland, police documents show.

Floyd Palmer was part of a security detail at a Baltimore mosque in June 2001 when he shot another man working with him, wounding him in the back, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday. Palmer tried to fire again, but the gun jammed. When other people ran over to him, he turned the gun on them, but it wouldn't fire, according to the documents.

During a pretrial psychological evaluation, Palmer said the shooting occurred in part because he believed that NFL player Ray Lewis and members of his own family were out to get him.

Palmer was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2004 after pleading not criminally responsible to the mosque shooting. Despite objections from prosecutors, a judge released him in 2006 on the condition that he abide by a number of restrictions for five years.

It's not clear when Palmer made his way south. He had been working at the Rev. Creflo Dollar's World Changers Church International just south of Atlanta, but quit in August for "personal reasons," Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said.

On Wednesday, authorities said the 51-year-old Palmer walked into a chapel and opened fire, killing Greg McDowell, 39, who was leading a morning prayer service for a group of about 25 people. McDowell is identified as a warehouse manager for the church on a LinkedIn web page.

A witness told police he heard about five gunshots, but that only McDowell was hit, according to a police report. The witness said he ducked down, then looked up and made eye contact with Palmer before the suspect began "walking calmly towards the exit of the chapel." The witness said he ran outside to get help and saw Palmer leaving the parking lot in a black vehicle, the report says. Officers recovered about a dozen shell casings for a .380-caliber handgun, but they have not located the weapon.

Police arrested Palmer several hours later when they spotted his Subaru station wagon at a mall in the upscale Buckhead community, north of downtown Atlanta.

Authorities were trying to figure out if Palmer and McDowell knew each other.

Visibly distraught members of McDowell's family showed up at the Fulton County jail for Palmer's first court hearing Thursday, but he waived his appearance. Later in the day, however, he changed his mind. Another hearing was scheduled for Friday.

Palmer faces murder and firearms charges. It was not immediately clear if Palmer has an attorney. The Fulton County public defender's office didn't return a phone message Thursday.

In Baltimore, officials were taking a closer look at the 2001 shooting. According to the pretrial psychological evaluation, Palmer said the shooting occurred because one of his cousins, Richard Lollar, was killed in Atlanta shortly after the 2000 Super Bowl.

Lewis, a Baltimore Ravens linebacker, was charged in the stabbing death of Lollar and another man, but he was exonerated. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obstruction of justice. Two other defendants were acquitted in the case.

Palmer said he shot Reuben Jerry Ash outside the mosque because he believed Ash was being paid by Lewis to "get rid of him," according to the psychological evaluation. The shooting left Ash paralyzed.

A judge released Palmer from the psychiatric hospital on the condition he live with his mother, not own or possess a weapon and continue treatment for the next five years. The judge noted Palmer's lack of a history of mental illness, his two-decade employment with the Social Security Administration and his full remission from mental illness.

The state attorney general's office objected, saying Palmer did not understand that he remained mentally ill. That "indicates a high likelihood that he will not be compliant," their response stated, adding there "was no real evidence Mr. Palmer would not be a danger to himself or others if released with or without conditions."

In Atlanta, the violence upset members and neighbors of the church, which is one of the largest in the United States, claiming 30,000 members at the main campus and a ministry of satellite churches across the country. It is led by Dollar, who was not there at the time of the shooting.

Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches.

Dollar didn't respond to requests for comment from The AP, but he addressed the matter while preaching Wednesday evening at a Bible study in the campus's larger World Dome sanctuary.

He described McDowell as "one of our very faithful, loving, kind servant-volunteers," and someone who used to open the door for his mother at services. He recalled presiding over his marriage.

"This Wednesday... an employee of the church, a friend of the ministry, was doing corporate prayer and while he was praying he was shot several times and fell dead..." Dollar said, as some in the crowd wiped away tears.

"Many people say, 'What was that?'" Dollar said. "Because we work so hard to try to be prepared for the evil that comes from the outside in, and we work so hard to be prepared for the challenges that come from the outside in. But sometimes you have to be careful because you can be clipped by something that's on the inside, from behind. And that's what happened today"

Dollar said "a woman lost a husband, and two little boys lost their father." But Dollar also said he viewed the shooting as a double tragedy.

"Where some would say one life was lost, for me as a spiritual father, two lives were lost," he said. "It was a life of two precious brothers that was messed up."
