Guest Blogger: 5 Garden Shed Transformation Ideas

?Guest Blogger #849, Entry #2034, January 22, 2012

If you are someone who is fortunate enough to have a garden shed in your backyard, congratulations! Sure, to you, it might initially seem like nothing more than a small place to put your gardening tools, but with a bit of creativity and a few dollars (plus a bit of patience and perhaps a hired contractor in some cases), it can be a lot more to you and your family than just where the lawn mower goes. Don?t believe us?

Just check out these awesome uses for a garden shed:

Guest room.

If you are someone who has visitors come on a fairly regular basis, but you find yourself putting them on an air mattress or the couch, your garden shed could serve as a nice alternative. Now, if you have no electricity in there, to a certain extent, it could end up being a bit of a project but websites like HGTV and Network can easily walk you through what?s required (along with providing recommendations on where to go if it?s more than you can do alone).

Home office.

Do you work from home but sometimes due to all of the ?family traffic?, you find that it can be hard to concentrate? While you could certainly sound proof a room in your home, don?t overlook the garden shed out back. If you clean it out, add a coat of paint and install some nice lighting, it could be the perfect ?office away from home? solution.

Greenroom.

People with ?green thumbs? not only enjoy planting and pruning, but they usually want to do it in a space that?s quiet so that they concentrate without any distractions. In coming to a decision about if the garden shed is an ideal spot for your flowers and plants, just remember to keep in mind that the main thing that plants need (as it relates to a green room) are humidity, protection from extreme weather and plenty of sunlight. If that is the kind of environment that your garden shed can provide, then you?ve just found yourself your own little greenroom.

Kid?s playhouse.

What parent hasn?t found themselves wishing that their children had a place where they could be (basically) as loud as they want without being too far away from the house? If you live in a safe neighborhood with a fenced-in yard, that is a great atmosphere for converting a garden shed into a child?s playhouse. To make it even more fun, you can tell your child that it?s like having one of their own?portable buildings?where they can even help to decorate by picking out the paint they would like, bringing some of their toys into the shed and perhaps even making a sign that says ?open? and ?closed? so that it can serve as their own little hideout.

Bathroom (or outdoor shower).

While we don?t live in The Little House on the Prairie days (which means we don?t need an outhouse), there are still many people who will change their garden shed into either an outdoor (which is basically just an additional bathroom) or outdoor shower spot. For more information on how to do make one, visit YouTube or Do It Yourself and put ?how to make an outdoor bathroom? in the search field.

Hubble image: The galaxy puzzle in the constellation of Centaurus

Jan. 7, 2013 ? The Universe loves to fool our eyes, giving the impression that celestial objects are located at the same distance from Earth. A good example can be seen in a new spectacular image produced by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The galaxies NGC 5011B and NGC 5011C are imaged against a starry background.

Located in the constellation of Centaurus, the nature of these galaxies has puzzled astronomers. NGC 5011B (on the right) is a spiral galaxy belonging to the Centaurus Cluster of galaxies lying 156 million light-years away from Earth. Long considered part of the faraway cluster of galaxies as well, NGC 5011C (the bluish galaxy at the center of the image) is a peculiar object, with the faintness typical of a nearby dwarf galaxy, and the size of an early-type spiral.

Astronomers were curious about the appearance of NGC 5011C. If the two galaxies were at roughly the same distance from Earth, they would expect the pair to show signs of interactions between them. However, there was no visual sign of interaction between the two. How could this be possible?

To solve this problem, astronomers studied the velocity at which these galaxies are receding from the Milky Way and found that NGC 5011C is moving away far more slowly than its apparent neighbor, and its motion is more consistent with that of the nearby Centaurus A group at a distance of 13 million light-years. Thus, NGC 5011C, with only about ten million times the mass of the sun in its stars, must indeed be a nearby dwarf galaxy rather than a member of the distant Centaurus Cluster as was believed for many years.

Problem solved.

How U.S. states decide which child receives early intervention for developmental problems

Jan. 7, 2013 ? A new study by researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine has found large differences in the criteria that U.S. states use to determine eligibility for Medicare Part C early intervention services for infants and toddlers who have developmental delays. A developmental delay is any significant lag in a child's development as compared with typical child development.

Current eligibility criteria for Part C services vary from state to state. With their colleagues, Steven Rosenberg, PhD, associate professor, University of Colorado Department of Psychiatry and Cordelia Robinson, PhD, RN, professor of Pediatrics and director of JFK Partners have found that many states make too many children candidates for Part C early intervention. This is a problem because although states make many children with mild problem candidates for services no state serves enough children to cover all those who have moderate or severe delays.

"States need to look at the criteria they use to determine which infants and toddlers are eligible for early intervention. They need to ask themselves why they have such broad criteria when they can't serve all children under 3 years who have severe developmental delays. It may help for states to adopt more uniform eligibility criteria," said Rosenberg.

The article "Part C Early Intervention for Infants and Toddlers: Percentage Eligible Versus Served" was published January 2013 in the journal Pediatrics.

OnBlog: 5 new digital buyer insights from NAR/Google

Have you read the joint report from NAR and Google on the digital house hunt? It?s chock full of exploration and Google-provided insights on how consumers are using different combinations of web, mobile, and tablet to find their new homes. Some of the report echoes what we have been saying for years: today?s digital consumer (which includes 90% of those buying homes today) does their homework ahead of time.

What did surprise me from the report was just how much real estate-related local searches have grown. Consumers ?switch devices to suit their needs at any given moment? and search carelessly, bouncing back and forth ?to look at ratings and reviews, styles and prices, and then search[ing] again.?

Here are 5 insights you don?t want to miss:

  1. Real estate related searches on Google have grown 253% in the past 4 years.
  2. 69% of home shoppers who take action on a real estate brand website begin their research with a local term.
  3. 89% of new home shoppers use a mobile search engine at the onset and throughout their research ? wow!
  4. It?s not just Gen Y: 75% of senior home buyers go online to search for a home.
  5. 52% of actions on a real estate brand site directly from a local search on a search engine.

Another point that stuck out is that most internet browsers use multiple sources while researching a home. Is it because they?re not getting what they need from the brand sites? Ask yourself: do you have Community, School, Points of Interest, Neighborhood-level Content, and Home Sales Trends buyers demand? Are they engaged on mobile and tablet with continuity?

Read on below for a great depiction of why you should be thinking about enhancing your brand experience across devices. It might be the best 5 minutes you invest today.

Helicopter crashes in Peru, killing all seven aboard

LIMA (Reuters) - A helicopter carrying seven people crashed in Peru's Amazon jungle on Monday and all aboard perished, a judicial official said on Monday.

Corpac, Peru's air transport agency, said the helicopter was operated by the local unit of U.S.-based Columbia Helicopters. Columbia is known for its tandem rotor heavy-lift aircraft used in logging and oil exploration work. Columbia's Lima office declined to comment.

Marco Ochoa, the judicial official, said five U.S. citizens and two Peruvians were on the helicopter and that rescue crews were recovering their bodies.

Local media reports said the people on board worked for Petrominerales Ltd, a Canadian-based oil exploration firm focused on Latin America. Petrominerales' Lima office declined to comment.
